TP-Link Archer BE600 Review: BE9700 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 Router With a 10G Port

The TP-Link Archer BE600 is a tri-band BE9700 Wi-Fi 7 router whose useful trick is not the “9.7 Gbps” on the box. It is the 10 Gbps WAN/LAN port on a chassis that Amazon currently sells for $189.98, against a $249.99 list. That is the price of a midrange dual-band box, attached to a 6 GHz radio and a wired layout most flagships still charge extra for.

Amazon’s listing calls it the TP-Link Tri-Band BE9700 WiFi 7 Router (Archer BE600). BE9700 is the class rating. Archer BE600 is the model. Do not mix it up with the cheaper Archer BE550 (BE9300, no 10G port) or the much more expensive Archer BE800. Official specs live on TP-Link’s US product page.

Who the Archer BE600 is for

This is a standalone Archer router, not a Deco mesh node. One box, six antennas, five Ethernet ports, a USB jack, and a Tether-app setup. It is aimed at a house that still fits under a single well-placed router — TP-Link’s own language is “3-bedroom houses” — and at an internet plan that has already outgrown gigabit.

The buyer who should stop scrolling is on fiber above 2.5 Gbps, or about to be. Many Wi-Fi 7 routers in this price band give you a 2.5G WAN port and then gigabit LAN jacks. The BE600 gives you a 10G combo port plus four 2.5G ports — a 10G jack most rivals still reserve for much more expensive chassis, which is why the sale price matters.

It is a weaker fit if every client in the house is still Wi-Fi 5, if you need three nodes on day one, or if you want a controller with no cloud account and no security subscription. Those jobs belong to other products we have already covered.

The 10G port is the reason to buy this one

“Up to 9.7 Gbps” is the sum of three theoretical radio rates. No laptop will see it. The number that actually hits the wall is the WAN port.

The BE600’s layout is:

  • 1× 10 Gbps WAN/LAN
  • 1× 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN
  • 3× 2.5 Gbps LAN

On a 1 Gbps or 2 Gbps plan, use the 10G jack as a LAN port for a desktop, a NAS, or a 10G switch, and feed the modem into the 2.5G WAN/LAN. On a 5 Gbps, 8 Gbps, or 10 Gbps fiber plan, reverse that: 10G to the ONT or gateway, 2.5G ports for the rest of the desk. TP-Link’s footnote is the usual one — actual throughput is capped by the port you use, the cable, and the ISP — but the hardware is there, which is more than you can say for the ASUS RT-BE90U. That BE9400 tri-band is a strong router with four 2.5G ports and no 10G jack at all.

Firmware after launch added link aggregation. Confirm in Tether whether you can bond two of the 2.5G LAN ports toward a NAS or switch; do not assume it behaves like a managed-switch LAG until you have toggled the setting.

The USB 3.0 port is a bonus, not a substitute for that NAS. It speaks Samba, FTP, and a media server on NTFS, exFAT, HFS+, and FAT32. Fine for casual file sharing and family photo playback. Not fine as the only copy of anything you care about.

Wireless: what BE9700 and 6 GHz actually get you

The radios are split like this:

  • 2.4 GHz: up to 1,032 Mbps
  • 5 GHz: up to 2,882 Mbps
  • 6 GHz: up to 5,765 Mbps

The 6 GHz band is the reason this is a Wi-Fi 7 router instead of a faster Wi-Fi 6 box. It is a cleaner slice of spectrum, it supports 320 MHz channels, and it is where 4K-QAM and Multi-Link Operation do the most work — if the client supports them. TP-Link is explicit that MLO, 320 MHz, 4K-QAM, OFDMA, and MU-MIMO all require matching client hardware, and that 320 MHz is 6 GHz only. A Wi-Fi 6 laptop will sit on 5 GHz. A smart plug will sit on 2.4 GHz. Neither will magically become a Wi-Fi 7 client because the router is new.

MLO is the feature worth wanting on a phone or laptop that actually has it. The client can use more than one band at once, which helps more with reliability and latency than with a single speed-test screenshot. Smart Connect will try to park each device on a sensible band if you would rather not manage three SSIDs.

Treat the 9.7 Gbps class rating the way we treated the Deco BE11000’s “11 Gbps” branding: as a sum, not a promise. Close-range 6 GHz to a 2×2 Wi-Fi 7 laptop should be the fast path. Across the house, 5 GHz will do more of the work, and 2.4 GHz will still be the band that reaches the camera over the garage.

Coverage, placement, and EasyMesh

Six external antennas with beamforming is the coverage story. Amazon rates it at up to 2,600 sq ft and 120 devices; TP-Link’s spec table is vaguer (“3-bedroom houses”). Both are vendor numbers. Brick, plaster, foil-backed insulation, and a router stuffed in a media cabinet will cut them down, and 6 GHz suffers first — shorter range, worse wall penetration than 5 GHz.

The chassis helps more than the antenna count. At 10.6 × 6.0 × 1.9 inches it is a flat slab, not the sprawling GT-BE98 Pro. That means it is allowed to live in the open, which is the single largest performance variable you control. Put it high, central, and unobstructed. Hide it and you paid for a 6 GHz radio you then buried.

If one box is not enough, the BE600 is EasyMesh-compatible. Add another EasyMesh router or extender rather than replacing the whole system. Firmware 1.3.5 (US V1.6, published 26 August 2026) also added MLO mesh, IoT-Wi-Fi client binding, and EasyMesh stability fixes. Cross-vendor EasyMesh still depends on both ends implementing the profile; TP-Link’s own footnote says firmware mismatches can break the link.

A house that already needs three nodes is a mesh purchase, not a router purchase. That is the Deco BE11000, which puts four 2.5G ports on every node and trades away the 10G jack. Tether, HomeShield, and the paywall

Setup is the Tether app: connect the router to the modem, power both on, follow the prompts. TP-Link also ships a full web UI, which is a real difference from Deco, where the browser interface is close to useless. Guest networks exist on 6 GHz, 5 GHz, and 2.4 GHz. There is a separate IoT SSID with WPA3. QoS is by device. Alexa and Google Assistant can toggle basics. Automatic firmware updates ride on a TP-Link ID.

HomeShield is where the fine print lives. TP-Link’s product footnote says the kit includes basic and advanced features, and that advanced features require a paid subscription. The free tier covers a router and wireless security scan, IoT device identification, basic profiles, bedtime, pause-the-internet, and URL blocking. The tools people actually mean by “parental controls” and “network protection” — app blocking, YouTube restrictions, SafeSearch, intrusion prevention, web protection, real-time IoT protection — sit on paid plans.

Security+ and Advanced Parental Controls include a one-month trial for new users. Total Security does not. QoS stays free. This is the same paywall we called out on the Deco BE11000, and it is the opposite of ASUS’s subscription-free AiProtection Pro on the RT-BE90U and RT-BE55. Budget for it, or decide you only needed WPA3, a guest network, and the IoT SSID.

VPN support is the software feature that does not need a subscription. The BE600 can run OpenVPN, WireGuard, L2TP, and PPTP as both client and server, and TP-Link says it can keep a VPN tunnel up alongside ordinary internet so the whole house does not have to hairpin through the tunnel. That is more flexibility than most consumer routers at this price still bother with.

Security and the FCC import situation

A router sits between every device in the house and the internet. The BE600’s built-in surface is the usual set: admin UI (HTTP/HTTPS on 80/443), Tether’s extra TCP/UDP ports, DHCP, DNS, VPN server, USB file sharing, UPnP, and whatever you expose with port forwarding. Use a strong admin password, turn off remote administration unless you need it, keep USB shares off the guest network, and stay on current firmware. US V1.6 has been getting regular builds through August 2026, including security and stability fixes.

TP-Link is a signatory of CISA’s Secure-by-Design pledge, which the Amazon listing leans on. A pledge is a process commitment, not a pentest. The more practical point is that HomeShield’s intrusion-prevention and malicious-site blocking are the paid tier, so a default BE600 is a well-featured consumer firewall, not a monitored security appliance.

The FCC covered-list issue is the same one we walked through in the Deco BE11000 review. In March 2026 the FCC added foreign-produced consumer routers to the Covered List. That restriction hits new equipment authorizations. Hardware already authorized can still be imported and sold; devices in homes keep getting security updates under the FCC’s waiver. Buying and using a BE600 is unaffected. The real risk is roadmap risk: if TP-Link cannot keep landing approvals, the EasyMesh node you hoped to add in three years may not exist in the US catalog. Existing gear keeps working either way.

If the cloud account and the subscription are the dealbreakers, that is a different product category. The UniFi Dream Machine SE is the “we will own the controller” version of this conversation.

Who should buy the Archer BE600

Buy it if you have, or are about to have, a fiber plan faster than 2.5 Gbps and you want a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 radio without paying flagship money. The 10G port is the feature that makes the BE600 make sense, and $189.98 is the price that makes it obvious.

Buy it if you have a 2.5G or 10G desktop or NAS and a house that one well-placed router can cover. Four 2.5G ports plus the 10G combo is a small multi-gig switch glued to the access point.

Buy it if you want EasyMesh as an option, not as a three-pack you have to unpack tonight.

Who should skip it

Skip it if your plan is gigabit or slower and your phones are still Wi-Fi 6. A dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router like the RT-BE55, or even a good Wi-Fi 6 box such as the Archer Air R5, will feel the same in daily use for less money.

Skip it if the house already has dead zones on two floors of brick. Start with a mesh kit, not a single Archer and a promise to “add a node later.”

Skip it if you refuse a TP-Link ID, or if you need statistics, VLANs, and no security paywall. That is UniFi, or an ASUS router running AiProtection without a subscription.

Skip it if you need two 10G ports and a second 6 GHz radio. That is the GT-BE98 Pro, and it costs like it.

Verdict

The Archer BE600 is the current value argument in tri-band Wi-Fi 7, and the argument is the wired panel. A 10G combo port, four 2.5G jacks, a real 6 GHz radio with 320 MHz and MLO, EasyMesh, and a usable VPN stack is hardware you usually pay flagship money for. At the $249.99 list it is merely competitive. At $189.98 it is the router to beat for a multi-gig home that still fits under one box.

The reservations are software, not silicon. HomeShield’s useful half is a subscription. 6 GHz will not traverse the house the brochure implies. A minority of Amazon reviews (the listing sits at about 4.2 stars from a few hundred ratings) mention reboots when all three bands are opened to maximum width — if that shows up, drop channel width on 6 GHz before you return the unit. And TP-Link’s US future is messier than the hardware in the box.

None of that undoes the port layout at this price. If you are replacing an ISP gateway on a fast fiber plan and you have at least one Wi-Fi 7 or 6E client, the BE600 is the buy. If you are still on 300 Mbps with a drawer full of Wi-Fi 5 phones, keep walking.
