UniFi Dream Machine SE (UDM-SE) Review: Four Years In

We've been rocking a Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine SE since early 2023, and in nearly four years it has done exactly one surprising thing — and it wasn't a networking problem. Lately we've been wondering whether it's time to move to something newer like the Cloud Gateway Fiber, which felt like a good excuse to write down what living with the UDM-SE has actually been like.

Short version: the networking side has been boring in the best possible way. The hardware side had one genuinely annoying failure that says more about Ubiquiti's repair policy than about the router itself.

Pros and cons

What the UDM-SE actually is

Ubiquiti markets the Dream Machine Special Edition as a "10G cloud gateway," which undersells how much is crammed into the chassis. In one 1U box you get a router, a stateful and application-aware firewall with IDS/IPS, an eight-port PoE switch, the UniFi Network controller, and a UniFi Protect NVR with its own drive bay.

The thing people most often get wrong: there is no WiFi radio in the UDM-SE. It is not a wireless router. If you buy one, you are also buying access points. That's the opposite of the smaller Dream Router line, which does have radios built in, and it trips up a lot of first-time UniFi buyers.

Under the lid it's a quad-core ARM Cortex-A57 at 1.7 GHz with 4 GB of RAM, 16 GB of eMMC, and an integrated 128 GB SSD. Ubiquiti rates it for 3.5 Gbps of IDS/IPS throughput, 100+ managed UniFi devices, and 1,000+ simultaneous clients. For a house, those numbers are absurd headroom. For a small office, they're comfortable.

Ports, and the PoE catch nobody mentions

Ubiquiti's own callout diagram is the clearest way to see the layout, front and back:

The port count is generous for the price. Eight gigabit RJ45 ports with PoE, a 2.5 GbE RJ45 WAN port, and two 10G SFP+ cages — one of which defaults to WAN, the other to LAN. You can reconfigure up to eight WAN ports if you're doing something exotic with multi-WAN.

Here's the part worth planning around before you buy. The 180W PoE budget sounds enormous, and in aggregate it is — but only two of the eight ports are PoE+ (802.3at, 30W). The other six are plain PoE (802.3af, 15.4W). That matters more every year, because newer UniFi APs increasingly want PoE+. The U7 Pro Max in our setup draws up to 25W and needs a PoE+ port; older gear like the U6 Pro and U6 Lite runs happily on standard 802.3af. So if your plan is three WiFi 7 access points fed straight off the gateway, you are one port short before you've plugged in a single camera.

The other constraint is speed, not power: every RJ45 switch port is gigabit. The 2.5 GbE port is WAN-side, and the only multi-gig LAN connection is the single 10G SFP+ cage. In practice that means a downstream switch, which is exactly what we ended up doing.

Our setup, four years in

For context on what these numbers look like in a real house, here's what hangs off ours:

  • Access points: U7 Pro Max, U6 Pro, U6 Lite
  • Cameras and Protect devices: G3 Instant, G6 Instant, G4 Doorbell Pro — four cameras recording in total
  • Voice: a UniFi Phone
  • Switching: a USW Flex 2.5G 8 and a USW Flex XG in line
  • Storage: a 2 TB 3.5-inch spinning disk in the gateway's own bay

Speeds are exactly what we expect at every point in the network, and there has been no unplanned downtime in nearly four years — with one exception, which we'll get to. Firmware updates come down through the UniFi Network app, take a couple of minutes, and haven't broken anything. That's not an exciting thing to report, but it's the whole reason people pay the UniFi premium.

UniFi Protect and the drive bay

The NVR side is the UDM-SE's best argument over a cheaper gateway. Four cameras record continuously to that 2 TB drive with no cloud subscription, no per-camera fee, and no third-party app. Ubiquiti rates the chassis for 24 HD, 14 2K, or 8 4K cameras, so four is a light load.

The 128 GB SSD is doing quiet work here. It's not general video storage — it holds smart-detection clips and the application data, which is why scrubbing the Protect timeline feels responsive instead of waiting on a spinning disk to seek. It's an easy spec line to skim past and one of the most noticeable things day to day.

Two practical notes. The bay ships empty, so budget for a drive, and use a surveillance-rated one — continuous camera writes are exactly the workload that kills desktop drives. And there's only one bay, so there's no redundancy. If that drive dies, your recordings go with it. The Dream Machine Pro Max is the model to look at if two-drive protection matters to you.

The power supply failure, and why it's a real mark against Ubiquiti

About three years in, the UDM-SE just stopped. Completely black screen, no boot. We tried the usual internet advice — pull every cable and the hard drive, leave it unplugged for a couple of hours — and got nothing.

Taking the lid off found the culprit immediately: the internal supply wasn't putting out 54 VDC. A dead power supply on an otherwise perfectly healthy $499 router should be a twenty-minute fix. It wasn't, for two reasons. We were out of warranty, and Ubiquiti does not sell replacement parts for these. Not the PSU, not anything. The best they offered was 10% off a brand new unit, which is a $450 answer to an $80 problem.

So we fixed it ourselves. A Mean Well HLG-240H-54A turned out to be a spec match, cost around $80, and is almost certainly better built than what came out. The swap is genuinely close to plug-and-play — four corner screws, a firm pull against the adhesive pads, then cut and strip the original connectors and join input and output with WAGO connectors. We want to be fair about what this means. One PSU failure isn't a pattern, and the device has otherwise been flawless. But the no-spare-parts policy is a genuine reason to hesitate on any expensive Ubiquiti hardware, because it turns a cheap, common, wear-item failure into a full replacement for anyone who isn't comfortable inside a chassis with mains wiring. If you're not, factor a UI Care plan ($99 for five years on this model) into the purchase price rather than treating it as an upsell.

The 1.3-inch touchscreen is a novelty

The little front display is nicely made. The panel is crisp, the touch response is fine, and it cycles through throughput, uptime and connection status.

And we have essentially never used it. In four years it has not once been the fastest way to answer a question — the phone app is always already in hand, and it shows more. There's a fair argument that a rack-mounted gateway with a status screen saves you opening a browser to check whether the internet is up, and in a wiring closet at a client site we can see the appeal. In a home rack, it's jewelry. Nice jewelry, but don't let it factor into the buying decision.

Rack fit

It's a full-width 1U box, 17.4 inches wide, 11.2 inches deep, and 5 kg. That depth is the number to check before ordering: shallow wall-mount racks and network cabinets are frequently under 11 inches usable once you account for the rear cable bend, and 285.6 mm plus patch cables needs more room than the spec sheet implies.

Two rear-panel details are worth knowing. There's a DC input for a USP-RPS redundant power supply, which is a nice option on a device whose power supply we've now personally watched fail. And the AC inlet has a safety latch, so the cord doesn't walk out when you're working behind the rack.

Should you get a Cloud Gateway Fiber instead?

This is the question that started this whole post, and the honest answer surprised us. The Cloud Gateway Fiber is $220 cheaper and beats the UDM-SE outright on routing performance.

The newer Cortex-A73 gives the Fiber a 5 Gbps IDS/IPS rating against the UDM-SE's 3.5 Gbps, a 10 GbE RJ45 WAN port instead of 2.5 GbE, and 2.5 GbE on all four of its switch ports. If you have or expect multi-gigabit fiber, it is straightforwardly the better router.

But look at what you give up, because for our setup it's decisive. The Fiber's PoE budget is 30W across a single port — that is one access point, not seven PoE devices. Replacing the UDM-SE with one means also buying a PoE switch, which erases the price advantage and adds a box. Protect storage moves to NVMe capped at 2 TB, which is less video than a cheap 3.5-inch drive. Device and camera limits are halved. And there's no Shadow Mode or DC power backup.

So: if you're buying new and you don't need integrated PoE, buy the Cloud Gateway Fiber. If you need PoE switching, HDD-based camera storage, or a rack, the UDM-SE still earns its price. And if you already own a UDM-SE that's working, there's no upgrade case at all unless your internet plan has outgrown 3.5 Gbps. Ours hasn't, and won't for years.

Who should buy the UDM-SE

Buy it if you want one rack unit to be your router, firewall, PoE switch, controller and camera recorder. That consolidation is the whole point, and nothing else in Ubiquiti's lineup does it at this price. It's a particularly good fit for a house or small office with a handful of UniFi APs, a few Protect cameras, and a modest number of gigabit wired devices — which describes an awful lot of UniFi installs.

It's also the right pick if you want the Protect NVR on cheap spinning storage rather than expensive NVMe, or if Shadow Mode failover and a redundant power input are on your requirements list.

Who should skip it

Skip it if your internet connection is faster than 3.5 Gbps, or you expect it to be soon. Skip it if you need multi-gigabit wired LAN, because eight gigabit ports and one SFP+ cage is a hard ceiling. Skip it if you're planning three or more modern PoE+ access points fed directly from the gateway, since there are only two PoE+ ports.

And skip it if you want camera storage redundancy — one drive bay means one point of failure. That's the Dream Machine Pro Max's job.

Verdict

Four years in, the UDM-SE has earned its rack space. The consolidation is real, the software is the best in its price class, and the uptime record speaks for itself. Ours is still running, still doing everything we ask, and we don't plan to replace it for several more years.

The reservation isn't about the router. It's that Ubiquiti will happily sell you a $499 device and then refuse to sell you the $80 part that keeps it alive. We got lucky in that the failure was something we could fix on the bench. Plenty of buyers wouldn't have, and would have been handed a paperweight and a 10% discount code instead. Go in knowing that, and price a support plan accordingly.
