ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro Review: Absurd Looks, Serious Hardware

There is no polite way to introduce the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro. It is a black hexagonal slab with eight antennas splayed out of it, a glowing cyclops eye on the lid, red heatsink fins showing through a vent slot, and the words "FOR THOSE WHO DARE" printed on the chassis. It's kind of a cross between a space ship and a spider.

So the question worth asking isn't whether it looks ridiculous. It does. The question is whether any of that ridiculousness is load-bearing — whether the size and the styling are doing work, or whether you're paying for costume. The answer turns out to be split, and the part that matters most for your actual WiFi speeds is probably not the part you'd guess.

Yes, it looks absurd. Some of that is physics.

Start with the part ASUS can't help. This is a 4x4 router on four separate radios, which means sixteen antenna elements. Spatial multiplexing — the trick that lets MIMO send several data streams down the same channel at once — depends on those elements being physically separated by a meaningful fraction of a wavelength. Cram them together and the streams stop being distinguishable, and your throughput collapses back toward single-stream speeds.

That is why the eight antennas stick out at rude angles, and why nobody sells a quad-band 4x4 router the size of a hockey puck. The sprawl is the antenna array doing its job. The bigger the WiFi arrangement, the better the performance (often).

The bulk of the body is similarly earned. A quad-core 2.6 GHz SoC driving four radios and two 10 Gbps PHYs produces real heat, and ASUS chose to deal with it passively — that big red finned block visible through the top vent is the entire cooling system. The payoff is that the router is completely silent and stays pretty cool under loads. A smaller chassis would have needed a fan, and a fan in a device that runs 24 hours a day is a moving part waiting to fail and a noise source in a room you probably live in.

So: the footprint is engineering. The heatsink is engineering.

And some of it is pure costume

The rest is not. The Aura RGB lighting, the illuminated ROG eye, the see-through panel showing off gaming-themed patterns and slogans, the faceted armour plating wrapped around what is functionally a heatsink and a PCB — none of that moves a single packet. You can turn the lighting off in the firmware, which is the first thing many owners do, and the router performs identically.

It's worth being clear about what the ROG badge is charging for. ASUS sells a plainer sibling, the RT-BE96U, that covers much of the same ground with fewer multi-gig ports and none of the gaming furniture. Step up to the Pro and you're paying for four extra multi-gig ports, a pile of gaming-branded QoS features, and the light show. Two of those three are real.

Where the looks really do cost you performance

Here's the part that actually matters, and it has nothing to do with plastic.

A router performs best high up, central to the house, and out in the open. Every wall, floor, and metal appliance between the antennas and your laptop costs signal. This is the single largest performance variable a buyer controls, and it dwarfs the spec-sheet differences between competing flagship routers.

Now consider what people actually do with a device that looks like this. It goes in the basement. It goes in a cabinet. It gets shoved behind the TV, or into the corner of an office where guests won't see it. Routers in this design language tend to fail the household approval test, and losing that argument means losing the good placement.

That penalty lands hardest on exactly the feature you paid a premium for. The 6 GHz band has roughly two-thirds the effective range of 5 GHz at current permitted power levels, and noticeably worse penetration through walls and floors. A tri-band router in the open living room will comfortably beat a GT-BE98 Pro stuffed in a media cabinet, and it will not be close.

So the verdict on the aesthetics: the looks don't change what the hardware can do, but they change where the hardware ends up, and that changes everything. If this thing is going to live somewhere it can breathe and radiate, the styling is a non-issue.

If you already know it's getting hidden, buy something else — or get it up off the furniture entirely. A small cottage industry of third-party mounts has sprung up around this chassis, and a push-fit wall and ceiling bracket runs roughly $30 to $45. Putting the router high on a wall, clear of cabinets and appliances, is the cheapest performance upgrade available to you, and it solves the household-approval problem at the same time.

What quad-band actually means here

The naming across this lineup is deeply confusing, and it's the most common thing buyers get wrong.

Both the GT-BE98 and the GT-BE98 Pro are quad-band. They split the spectrum differently:

  • GT-BE98 (non-Pro) is BE25000: 2.4 GHz, two separate 5 GHz radios, and one 6 GHz radio.
  • GT-BE98 Pro is BE30000: 2.4 GHz, one 5 GHz radio, and two separate 6 GHz radios.

The Pro's headline numbers are 1,376 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, 5,764 Mbps on 5 GHz, and 11,529 Mbps on each of the two 6 GHz bands. Those are theoretical link rates, not speeds you will see, but the ratio tells you where ASUS spent the silicon.

The second 6 GHz radio is the marquee feature and the one to be most skeptical about. In principle it's excellent: dedicate one 6 GHz band to wireless backhaul in an AiMesh setup and you get a fast, clean link between nodes without stealing airtime from clients. That is a real and worthwhile use.

In practice, for a single-router household, the value is thin. Splitting the band means each radio has a smaller slice of spectrum to work with, which makes it harder to land a clean 320 MHz channel — the exact thing that makes 6 GHz fast in the first place. Combine that with 6 GHz's short range, and you're paying for a second copy of the band that is least likely to reach the far end of your house. If you're not running AiMesh with a wireless backhaul, the non-Pro's two 5 GHz radios are arguably the more useful split.

The ports are the strongest argument for buying it

Forget the WiFi for a moment. The wired side is where this router separates itself from everything else at the price, and it's the reason to pick the Pro over the standard GT-BE98.

You get two 10 Gbps ports — one WAN/LAN, one LAN — plus a 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN port, three more 2.5 Gbps LAN ports, and a single gigabit port. That's six multi-gig ports on a consumer router. The non-Pro gives you two.

Two 10 Gbps ports is the specific combination that matters, because it means you can take a 10 Gbps internet connection in on one and feed a 10 Gbps switch or a NAS out the other without a bottleneck in between. Dong Knows Tech recorded sustained rates above 6,300 Mbps across the 10 Gbps ports and pulled more than 5,500 Mbps of actual broadband through the 10 Gbps WAN on a 10 Gbps fibre line, which was among the fastest results recorded on a home router.

The second 10 Gbps port is designated the gaming port, which sounds like branding and mostly is — it automatically prioritises traffic from whatever is plugged into it. It's a convenience feature layered on QoS, not special silicon, but it works and it's one less thing to configure.

Performance, per the people who measured it

The consensus across published testing is unusually consistent: this is at or near the top of the consumer WiFi 7 field.

PCMag gave it an Editors' Choice and recorded the fastest 6 GHz throughput they had measured at the time of review, crediting the combination of 320 MHz channels, 4096-QAM, and a CPU they described as fit for a computer. Dong Knows Tech ran it for over two weeks, passed a three-day stress test without disconnections, and rated it as easily worth the $800 launch price, noting sustained multi-gigabit rates to WiFi 7 clients and strong performance with older WiFi 6 and 6E devices. Tom's Hardware landed in the same place, calling out class-leading performance and expandability.

Coverage is good but not magical — roughly 2,500 square feet from a central position is a reasonable expectation, with the usual enormous caveats about construction materials. Note that MLO and AFC were both absent at launch and arrived later by firmware, which is a useful reminder about how these products actually ship.

The firmware is the real risk

This is the part the launch reviews couldn't have caught, and it's the strongest argument against buying one.

ASUS router firmware has a mixed reputation, and the GT-BE98 Pro has attracted a steady stream of owner complaints on ASUS's own ROG and ZenTalk forums. The recurring pattern is wireless simply stopping: all SSIDs disappear from client devices while the router's band LEDs stay lit, and only a reboot brings it back. Others report clients flapping on and off the 6 GHz band in reconnect loops, and random drops after firmware updates that were fine before.

The community workarounds are consistent enough to be worth knowing before you buy — disabling Smart Connect, turning off Roaming Assistant, separating the 6 GHz SSID rather than letting band steering manage it, and doing a full factory reset after every firmware update rather than restoring a saved configuration. Several owners have resorted to scheduling a nightly reboot, which is a workaround, not a fix.

None of this is universal. Plenty of people run these for years without incident, and ASUS does ship fixes. But at least one build was pulled after release, which left owners choosing between a version with known wireless bugs and an older one missing security patches. That is an unpleasant position on a $600-plus router, and it's the main reason this doesn't score higher.

Power draw is not nothing

It measures to roughly 560 Wh per 24 hours, which works out to about 23W on average, continuously, forever. At typical US residential rates that's somewhere in the region of $25 to $30 a year, and more in Europe.

It's not a dealbreaker, but it is roughly double what a mainstream tri-band router pulls, and it's the sort of running cost that never appears in a spec comparison. Four radios and a computer-class CPU don't idle cheaply.

What it costs now

The $799.99 launch price is history. ASUS's own recommended price has settled at $699.99, and street pricing through 2026 has generally run between roughly $580 and $690, with periodic dips lower. Refurbished and open-box units regularly appear in the $400 to $545 range.

At $600 the value calculation changes substantially. At $800 this was a hard sell against a good tri-band router plus a separate 10 Gbps switch. At $600, with six multi-gig ports and no subscription fees for security or parental controls, it's a legitimately strong package — ASUS includes AiProtection Pro free for the life of the device, where NETGEAR charges annually for the equivalent.

Who should buy it

Buy it if you have multi-gigabit internet and something to wire into it. The two 10 Gbps ports are the whole argument, and if you have a 2 Gbps or faster connection plus a NAS or a 10 Gbps switch, very little else at this price will take full advantage of both ends.

Buy it if you're building an AiMesh system with wireless backhaul, because that's the scenario where the second 6 GHz radio stops being a marketing bullet and starts being properly useful.

Buy it if you want a deep, free feature set. ASUSWRT remains one of the most configurable consumer firmwares available, the VPN support is comprehensive, and nothing is paywalled.

And buy it if you have somewhere to put it where it can radiate freely and you don't mind — or actively enjoy — how it looks.

Who should skip it

Skip it if your internet is a gigabit or slower and you have no wired multi-gig devices. You will not see the difference, and a good tri-band WiFi 7 router will cover your house for half the money. Skip it if it's going to live in a cabinet or a basement. You'll be paying flagship money for degraded placement, and the 6 GHz bands in particular will not reach.

Skip it if you want networking gear you never think about. The firmware history here demands an owner who is willing to read release notes, factory reset after updates, and troubleshoot band steering.

And skip the Pro specifically — in favour of the standard GT-BE98 — if you don't need more than two multi-gig ports. The second 5 GHz radio on the non-Pro is more broadly useful in a single-router home than a second 6 GHz radio.

Verdict

The GT-BE98 Pro is a very good router wearing a very silly costume, and it's worth separating those two facts before you judge it.

The size is real engineering: sixteen antenna elements need room, and passive cooling needs mass. The RGB and the slogans are not, and you can switch them off. What you're actually buying is a quad-core router with six multi-gig ports, two of them at 10 Gbps, class-leading measured throughput, and a deep firmware with nothing behind a subscription. At current street pricing near $600, that's a strong package that nothing else quite matches on ports alone.

The reservations are the firmware and the placement. ASUS has a pattern of shipping builds that break wireless in ways that require a reboot to clear, and while most owners aren't affected, enough are that you should go in expecting to manage it. And be realistic about where this is going to sit, because a flagship router in a bad location is just an expensive one.

If you have fast internet, wired gear worth feeding, and a shelf you're willing to give up to a dead metal spider, it earns the money. If any of those three is missing, it doesn't.
